If customers can’t find you on Google Maps, you’re missing most “near me” searches, and the three companies that do show up get the calls. Here are the most common reasons contractors don’t appear, and what to do about each.

1. Your Google Business Profile isn’t verified or complete

An unverified profile won’t show reliably. Once it’s verified, fill in everything: business name, website, phone, hours, service area, services, a description and photos. Incomplete profiles lose to complete ones.

2. You chose the wrong primary category

Your primary category is one of the strongest local ranking signals. “Construction company” is broad. If most of your work is roofing, “Roofing contractor” will usually serve you better. Add secondary categories for your other services.

Google still favours businesses close to the person searching. If you list a huge service area, you won’t rank equally everywhere. Focus on the towns you most want to work in, and support each with a page on your website.

4. You don’t have enough recent reviews

Reviews affect both your map ranking and whether people call. What counts is having more recent, detailed reviews than the businesses ranking above you. Ask every happy client, and reply to every review.

5. Your business details don’t match across the web

Google compares your name, phone number and website across directories like Bing Places, Yelp, Houzz and industry listings. Old phone numbers, previous business names or duplicate listings confuse it. Clean them up so every listing matches your Google profile exactly.

6. Your website doesn’t back up your profile

Your Google profile links to your website, and Google reads it. A site with a clear page for each service and area, your business details and fast mobile loading strengthens your map rankings.

7. Your profile looks inactive

Profiles with regular posts, new photos and fresh reviews look active to customers and to Google. Post a recent project or update every week or two.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions.

Why is my business not showing up on Google Maps?

The most common reasons are an unverified or incomplete Google Business Profile, the wrong primary category, a service area that doesn't match where people search, few recent reviews, and inconsistent business details across the web.

How long does it take to show up on Google Maps?

A newly verified profile can appear within days, but ranking in the top three map results for competitive searches usually takes weeks to months of optimization and reviews.

Does my construction business need a physical address to rank on Google Maps?

No. Contractors who serve customers at the job site can set up a service-area business profile and hide their street address. They can still rank, especially near where they are based.
