The GTA is a set of local markets, not one
A homeowner in Oakville searches "roofer Oakville", not "roofer GTA", and Google's map pack favours contractors close to them. In our October 2026 GTA Google Reviews Benchmark, the median contractor in the map pack top 3 had about 100 Google reviews in searches for Toronto itself, but only 44 to 48 in Oakville, Scarborough and Brampton.
So we start where you can realistically rank, with a page and a profile set up for each city you want work in, and track your map position in every one of them.
Reviews are the price of entry
Across the GTA, the median map-pack contractor had 61 Google reviews, about 1.7 times Hamilton's 35 and twice Niagara's 29. Roofers needed far more, with a median of 122. A steady review routine is part of every GTA plan we run, along with photos: top-ranked Google Maps profiles had a median of 54 photos, against 29 for those ranked 11th to 20th.
Paid clicks are expensive here
In our GTA contractor search costs study, a Google Ads click for searches like "basement renovation Mississauga" averaged about US$13, and basement finishing clicks averaged about US$33. Ranking in the map pack and the organic results means you stop paying for every visit, which matters more in the GTA than anywhere else we have measured.
